first gig we ever played?!! - March 82, Radio City, Anaheim, California.
First song, Dave Mustaine breaks a string, eh! No roadies. No spare
guitars. This turned into a 10 minute stretch of silence (you could hear
a fucken pin drop) while Dave restrung his guitar. I was hiding behind
my bass drum, while James tried a very meek attempt at stand-up comedy
(Didn't work)...I almost ran screaming out of the club and quit...

Background info on this
gig: The guys found out that Saxon was playing at Whiskey at the end of
March, and were looking for a local band to open the shows. "Ratt"
was booked for the first two shows (two shows per night), and the other
slot for the second night was open. "Whiskey" management
wanted a tape to hear what Metallica sounds like so the guys borrowed a
four track recorder and as they only had "Hit The Lights"
complete of their own material they recorded covers "Killing
Time" (Sweet Savage) and "Let It Loose" (Savage). The
management of Whiskey liked the tape, didn't know that 2 of the songs
were covers, and offered Metallica the gig with Saxon.

Halen ilk. Opening quartet Metallica had one, but little else. The local
group needs considerable development to overcome a pervasive
