| Dublin Point Depot July 1999; The smallest indoor European gig
in 1999! The whole experience was great. Right from the grueling
pilgrimage (by National Express!) from Folkestone to Dublin as well as
the pub crawl around the city with 2 metal friends that had been at the
Dynamo Open Air gig with me a month or so prior to this compact show.
The setlist on the 1999 tour was one of the best I'd witnessed. Old and
new with a spattering of Garage Days Revisited! Eric Bells appearance on
Whisky was the icing on the cake and a moment I'll never forget. Great
gig, great crowd and bloody great hangover on the ferry going
home....oh, and they played Turn The Page!
S&M Symphony & Metallica Berlin
1999; Yet again a Euro excursion that was never going to disappoint. And
again, the journey that could have been so painful was turned into a
gargantous belly of laughs with the first (unofficial) outing of a batch
of Met World members! The build up to the gig was surreal, the gig was
great and another show that will always be up there with the best. Made
even more special since the death of Michael Kamen recently.
Werchter Festival July 2004; After
seeing the boys at Donington (well 3 outta 4 ain't bad) and meeting up
with a beefy stesh of the Metworld contingent for the Parc des Princes
gig (another great show), I headed over to the Rock Werchter for the
last European mainland gig on the Madly In Anger With The World Tour 04.
The set in my opinion rivaled 1999. A real blend of every angle that
Metallica have covered (and I got Memory Remains this year at last!).
The Belgians (as always) were an excited, friendly crowd and by sheer
fluke I managed to bump into Matthijs (Harvesters Of Holland) and have a
beer with him before the boys did the business. The Pyro show was a
great spectacle too. Jump In The Fire & Seek & Destroy ended the
tour. I ventured back to good ol' Blighty very, very happy and pondering
the possibility of taking in a US date on the tour...
New Orleans Arena, Louisiana, La, USA
2004. Taking MetWorld On Tour is always going to be an adventure with
the added bonus of a Met show thrown in. The decision to go to New
Orleans was based purely on time off work, tickets available and Expedia
quoting me happy. It panned out nicely too. The seeds of this trip
originally were planted back in June when the Hectorial suggested a
State side jolly for the next tour. Fair play to him! Seeing Met 'In The
Round' brought back memories from the Load tour but this time I was on
the rail. Trying to savour the event took some doing due to the anticipation
of what they would play and sheer enormity of traveling a round trip of
10,000 miles to see the boys. I was not left unhappy. The crowd rocked,
I got a few songs I never heard live before and No Leaf Clover was in
the cleft yet again. The whole socialising thingy that took me to the
French Quarter made the trip complete. The patrons of Bourban street
were complete fuckers (in a very good & positive way!)!!!! I don't
think I've ever drunk so much! Coupled with being Jet Lagged worse than
Alan Whicker after a tough week at work, made for an exceptional
MetWorld On Tour expo.

My Meet and Greet experience from Athens
03/07/07
After the inevitable waiting about for the guys to arrive we were taken
backstage and lined up ready to meet the band we have been following for
many years. One by one they emerged. Rob was first, he seemed in good
form, very happy to pose for a few snaps and see how we all were. Next up
was Kirk, again he seemed his usual calm self making general chit chat and
posing for photo's. To be honest, it took up until now for me to relax a
little and prepare some questions for James & Lars. Big Jim strolled round
next, he was quite shocked as I was English! I think he was expecting a
100% Greek M&G! We debated about the possibility of playing Breadfan or
even changing the opening song, I got a generic "We'll put it in the
suggestion box" reply but he genuinely came across as a nice bloke. Was I
star struck... just a tad. After about 5 hours (slightly exaggerated) or
so, Lars made it out, he too was shocked to be speaking to an Englishman
in Athens! We spoke for some time about the set and the possibility of No
Leaf Clover making a return. He was well up for it!!! Shame it didn't get
an airing till Sunday at Wembley, maybe I planted the Clover seed!?! Lars
was amazing though. He genuinely seemed to enjoy speaking to the fans and
didn't seem just to go through the motions of "sign, picture & move on".
Considering it was well under an hour before show time, he seemed happy to
take his time and make sure all the M&G winners got to have a chat.
